  High Efficiency UPS Systems

In the fall of 2008 Toshiba introduced a new type UPS. The UPS uses a new type of IGBT specifically designed for UPS application. Traditionally the IGBTs in UPS systems have been IGBTs designed and optimized for variable speed drives. With this new IGBT design optimized for UPS application, UPS efficiency has increased. Specifically the new design provides high efficiency for part and full loading. Designs common in the industry have efficiency losses of 6 to 20% or higher from 1/4 to full load. The new Toshiba design has losses for a 225 kVA UPS of 3.5% at full load and only 5.3% with 20% load. As most UPS have low percentage utilization, the high efficiency throughout its load profile is very significant. The power bill for the UPS losses will be halved in many cases. See the paper, Green IT - UPS Efficiency and Cost of Ownership for more background. For a technical explanation of the technology, see the White Paper by Toshiba.

This is a Highly Green Solution in that it reduces not only the power needed to for the IT equipment but also reduces heat output from the UPS which in turn reduces air conditioning sizes and operating cost.
